Art in Elkhart County - Stewart Johnson’s Sculptures

This morning, we were driving through downtown Middlebury when both John and I did a double take of a mailman in front of the post office. What were we seeing that was not there before? It was a life-size bronze sculpture, but looked so much like a  real mailman.

This week, 57 of Stewart Johnson’s life-size bronze sculptures were placed throughout the towns of Middlebury, Goshen, Elkhart, Bristol, Wakarusa and Nappanee as part of the 10th anniversary of the Elkhart County ’s Quilt Gardens. They will stay in place until mid-October.

The sculptures in Middlebury includes a man playing fetch with his big black dog in the park, a lady reading a book outside the library, a man selling hotdogs from a cart in downtown, the mailman sorting letters as he walks away from the post office, and a young girl playing with a hull-a-hoop.
