Homer Spit

A seal swimming in the fishing lagoon

Love spending time on Homer Spit! We spent the last two days here. It has everything a summer fishing village needs; fishing gear stores, a fishing lagoon, at least 5 different camping zones from small tent areas to large RV lots with full hookup, a large harbor with hundreds of private and commercial fishing boats, small art galleries, dive bars (we like the Salty Dawg Saloon), and terrific restaurants. Our favorite restaurant is Capt Patties with the Harbor Grill coming in as a close second.

Soldotna, Alaska

We hiked some of the trails just outside the town of Soldotna, beautiful scenery! Later, we went fishing for salmon on the Kenai River. First time fishing on the swift, deep river, lots of fun but no fish were caught.
For dinner, I cooked some of the halibut I caught on Saturday. Delicious! I still have about eight pounds in the freezer.

A day on Homer Spit

We enjoyed our day at Homer Spit, a narrow, strip of land that reaches four miles into Kachemak Bay, I caught my first silver salmon at the Spit fishing hole, well almost caught.  He put up a good fight and just as I was getting him out of the water he got away.   We celebrated the 'almost catch' with a salmon and halibut dinner at Capt Patties and then we walked over to the Salty Dawg Saloon to get a cold one. We added our dollar to the already thousand others hanging on the walls and ceilings.

Beyound Homer

We went to the beach today. Then we drove past the other side of Homer; the paved road turned to gravel, the gravel road ended and there was a trail. We kept going, so happy we did, the views were amazing! We saw two more glaciers. Later, we stopped by the Homer Spit and dropped a fishing line into the lagoon. Didn't catch anything, but we got to see a beautiful aerial show as two bald eagles glided and swirled in the sky above the lagoon.

Halibut Fishing with Afishunt Charters

Today I went fishing for halibut with Captain Cooper and his assistant Nick in the deep waters of Cook Inlet, So much fun! Everyone on the boat caught their limit. Saw otters and puffin birds. Awesome time!

First day of fishing

We fished at Homer's fishing hole, it was great trying out all the new fishing gear.  We didn't catch anything today so we went to Pattie's for a wonderful salmon  and halibut dinner.

Kenai Peninsula

Yesterday, we arrived at the Kenai Peninsula, they call this area the playground of Alaska. Checked into Alaskan Angler RV Park in the small oceanside community of Ninilchick. The first thing we did was schedule a charter deep-water fishing trip for this Saturday to catch halibut. Then we set out in the jeep to explore the area. We took the Kaliforsky Beach Road out to the sandy coastline. Gorgeous, you can see the active volcanoes in the distance across Cook Inlet. Today, we went to a sports store and bought everything we will need to fish for salmon. We start fishing tomorrow!
