Anchorage

We plan to move south tomorrow so today we spent our last full day in Anchorage riding our bikes, checking out the fishing at the river and going to the Moose Tooth for some amazing pizza. 

Talkeetna, Alaska

Today we went to the fabulous little town of Talkeetna where we had a wonderful day of strolling through small shops and talking to the friendly locals. It is a quirky kind of town, but that is part of the charm. We had an early lunch at West Rib Pub a nice place for a quick bite. Walking to the end of Main St, crossing through the park, we came to the turbulent confluence of three glacially fed rivers: the Susitna, the Chulitna and Talkeetna, creating many powerful whirlpools.  Roughly translated, the town's name Talkeetna means river of plenty. After playing by the river, we popped into Nagley's Store for some homemade fireweed ice cream - so good, a true Alaskan treat.

On the way out of town, we stopped in the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge for dinner. The lobby is warm and welcoming with a large fireplace and it is a great place to gather to view Denali.  This property is beautiful, and staff was great and the food was very good.

Eagle River, Alaska

We went into the wild today, we took every back road and off road we could find. We hiked along Eagle River and had a picnic lunch beside a beautiful lake. We saw lots of birds, a few porcupines and moose!

Walking on a Glacier

The adventure seekers in us came out today, we started this morning with one goal: to walk on a glacier. We found the Matanuska Glacier about 80 miles away. It was so cool to trek over such a large sheet of ice, a true remnant of the ice age! 

A day in Anchorage, Alaska

We went to the Zoo. We also visited the ULU Factory and bought some of their knives.

Chugach National Forest, Alaska

We drove the jeep to Chugach National Forest and hiked the trails. Amazing scenery! We could see the glacier from the shore of Portage Lake.

Anchorage, Alaska

We drove to Anchorage yesterday and checked into the Ship Creek RV Park for a couple of nights. Today we got the bicycles out and rode around to explore the area. One of our bike rides was to the river bank to see how the salmon fishing was going, there were some salmon swimming up stream but they expect much more over the next few weeks. Then we rode our bikes out to the park for a picnic. Nice day.
